Every homeowner encounters blocked drains at some point and when you do, it's nice to know that reliable Overberg Plumbers are just a phone call away.
The causes of blocked drains are countless, but the most common include:
The best way to prevent blocked drains, is to prevent inappropriate items from entering in the first place. However, when you do encounter a blocked drain, you can call on Overberg Plumbers to assist.
We understand that many homeowners would rather try DIY drain cleaning methods before calling drain cleaning services. Here are the most common options:
1. Coat Hanger / Plumber's Snake
You can use a flashlight and coat hanger to try fish out the blockage. This method is quite efficient for smaller clogs towards the entrance of the drain. Simply hook it onto the wire coat hanger and pull it out, and follow up by running hot water to ensure the clog is indeed cleared.
If you own a plumber's snake, the same method will work for you.
Remember to wear rubber gloves!
2. Plunger
Run enough water into the bath, shower or sink to cover the bottom of your plunger and to create the required suction. Block the overflow by taping it shut using duct tape. Now push the plunger down vigorously. You may need to push the plunger down several times to create sufficient pressure to open the drain up again.
You will know that the blockage is cleared when the water runs out freely.
3. Drain Cleaning Chemicals
While many people swear by drain cleaning chemicals or even Coke to clean drains, and while it may be easy, no reputable plumber would ever recommend these methods. Drain chemicals are harmful to the environment and if used incorrectly, can cause acid to splash back, causing burns.
Coke may help to dissolve a blockage. Pour 2 litres of Coke into the drain and let it sit overnight. In the morning, run hot water for about ten minutes. You can repeat the process if it did not work.
Caution: Introducing chemicals can cause corrosion or your pipes and fixtures.
If the above methods do not work, we recommend that you get in touch with Overberg Plumbers. We use professional-grade equipment that can clean your pipes without causing any damage that result in more costly repairs.
